How can Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC) be measured?
Measuring Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC) using an alkalinity method
Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC) is the sum of inorganic carbon species in a solution. The inorganic species include: carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, bicarbonate anion, and carbonate. The concentration of the different species depends on the pH of the solution (Bjerrum plot).

TIC is typically measured using infrared spectroscopy; however, if the dominant species is carbonate, the alkalinity titration methods can be used as an approximation. See the Water Analysis Handbook (WAH) alkalinity titration methods and, "Alkalinity Relationship" table.
