Carbonates and bicarbonates can be determined by performing an alkalinity test. Alkalinity of water is due primarily to the presence of bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydroxide ions. Carbonate ions (CO 3 2-) are able to react with and neutralize 2 hydrogen ions (H+) and the bicarbonate ions (HCO 3 -) are able to neutralize hydrogen ions (H+) or hydroxide ions (OH-) present in water.

Carbonate concentration can be estimated by the phenolphthalein and total alkalinity measurements and use of the "Alkalinity Relationship Table" located in the attachment below:
