Volatile ammonia is trapped (from the air) using sponges saturated with a glycerol/phosphoric acid solution contained in sponges. The sponges are extracted with water, for a final solution with a concentration of 0.029M glycerol/0.18M H3PO4. The glycerol/ H3PO4 extract is analyzed for ammonia by the salicylate method. When ammonia is heated with salicylate and hypochlorite in an alkaline phosphate buffer an emerald green color is produced which is proportional to the ammonia in the solution. The color is intensified by adding sodium nitroprusside.
